DotA 2 is widely thought to be one of the hardest games out there. Utterly unforgiving and with a steep learning curve, it has the ability to generate intense highs and devastating lows – for casual players and esports organizations alike. It’s with a heavy heart that we’re announcing the end of a chapter in the thick tome that represents the Ninjas in Pyjamas DotA legacy. But it is just that – a chapter. We’re not giving up, we’re not uninstalling and we’re not going to low prio.

Effective today, we’re releasing our current roster and shuttering our European DotA 2 division. Jonas Gundersen, COO at NiP, explains the situation:

This year has taken a massive toll on what was already an unstable ecosystem. With the indefinite postponement of the DPC and The International, we find ourselves on an increasingly unclear path to financial stability within the game. We’re seeing a high concentration of talent in the EU region, meaning that the cost of keeping up is markedly higher while revenues are dwindling. Ninjas in Pyjamas is one of the most iconic teams in the world – competing for the biggest trophies is a core part of our DNA, and the road to that through EU is simply not viable at this point. Because of that, we have decided to shut down our DotA2 department in its current format, and rethink our strategy and regional presence completely.

A special thanks goes to our players who have worked hard to improve, and taken positively to all our ideas on how to rethink the current way of approaching DotA2. It’s an incredibly talented group of players who I have no doubt will go far. I wish them the very best of luck.

As we put this chapter behind us, everyone here at NiP would like to thank all of you who have been on this journey with us. We look back fondly on Hamburg, Birmingham, Stockholm, Shanghai and all the other places we would never have been able to go to were it not for our DotA teams. Besides the above – to the players and team members that have been with us on this journey, in no particular order: Saahil, Danika, Peter, Per Anders, Marcus, Adrian, Neta, Martin, Oliver, Nico, Malthe, Rodrigo, Nikita, Jason, Akbar, Niklas, Curtis and Allen… thank you.

Jonasconcludes:

I am excited for what lies ahead. It’s rare that you get to rethink the whole infrastructure around a particular game. It opens a world of possibilities, and I am confident that we’ll re-enter the game at the highest level, once we find the right opportunity.

To all our fans: thank you for now, and stay tuned.

Major

・2018 Kuala Lumpur Major 4位
・2019 MDL Disneyland® Paris Major 5~6位
・The International 2019 Shanghai GS
